Arthur Miller
(1915–2005)
One of the towering figures of American drama. Author of Death of a Salesman (1949, Pulitzer Prize) — perhaps the defining American play of the 20th century — and The Crucible (1953), a searing allegory of McCarthyism through the Salem witch trials. Miller was himself blacklisted during the McCarthy era; his willingness to stand against the HUAC investigations at personal cost made him a figure of moral courage as well as artistic genius. His marriage to Marilyn Monroe added a dimension of cultural legend to an already extraordinary public life.
