One of the great American playwrights — winner of two Pulitzer Prizes for Drama (A Streetcar Named Desire, 1948; Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, 1955) and two New York Drama Critics' Circle Awards. His plays excavate psychological suffering, desire, family dysfunction, and the cruelty of illusion with a poetic ferocity that changed American theater. Alongside Arthur Miller, he defined the postwar American stage.
