Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama — spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and global voice for nonviolence, compassion, and interreligious understanding.

Herbert is one degree from the Dalai Lama through Desmond Tutu. The two were lifelong friends; their extended conversation became The Book of Joy, one of the great interfaith texts of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
