James McPherson

James M. McPherson (1936–) — historian of the Civil War era and professor emeritus at Princeton University. His Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era (1988) is widely regarded as the single best one-volume history of the Civil War; it won the Pulitzer Prize for History. President of the American Historical Association (1998).

Herbert and Jim were classmates at Gustavus Adolphus College in St Peter Minnesota. They were part of a ‘geek’ group that met at the home of Professor Rod Davis.
