John McPhee

John McPhee (1931–) — staff writer for The New Yorker since 1965, and widely considered the master of the long-form nonfiction essay in American letters. Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction (1999). His subjects have ranged from geology and nuclear physics to orange growers and birch bark canoes — always rendered with extraordinary precision and narrative grace. Long associated with Princeton, where he was born and has spent most of his life.
